Poetry Analysis: “Batter My Heart, Three-Personed God, For You” Essay

John Donne’s â€Å"Batter My Heart, Three-Personed God, For You† is an Italian sonnet written in iambic pentameter. The poem is about a man who is desperately pleading with his God to change him. He feels imprisoned by his own sinful nature and describes himself as betrothed to the â€Å"Enemy† of God, namely Satan. The speaker has a truly passionate longing to be absolutely faithful to his God, but at the same time is rendered hopeless by the reality that he cannot possibly achieve this on his own. In fact, he would have to be captured and completely made anew to ever find such faith. The entire poem is driven by this desperate longing for renewal. The speaker seems to start with a request that illustrates his despondency simply because of its harshness. (He requests to have his heart battered.-ln 1) As he continues in prayer, the character becomes more distraught. He explains his feelings of total helplessness in the simile found in line five, where he compares himself to an usurped town. By line eleven he has professed his deep-rooted love for his God and his awareness that he will never be faithful to this love unless he is torn and broken and then made new. In each breath released or word murmured by this character, the reader is perfectly aware that he is at the last of any strength he may have previously had. The speaker is quite aware that he is powerless on his own. He holds nothing back in this cry to his God for help, but instead is completely humbled by his sin. The words are full of a desperate longing to finally have a true, purely faithful love for his God. This desperation drives the entire poem from the very first word to the last. The primary technical device in this poem is the use of contradicting ideas, or paradoxes. The speaker consistently asks his God to grant him a request that can be gained only by going in what seems to be the opposite direction. He requests to be overthrown so that he may rise and stand (ln 3), and even more vividly to be ravished only so he can become chaste (ln 14). In nearly every sentence Donne writes, there is an example of such a paradox. The repetition of these opposing concepts makes the tone of desperation in the  speaker’s words easily detectable. A man has to be at his absolute end to ask that his God do more than simply seek to mend his wounds. The speaker declares in lines one and two that he would rather be battered. The fact that the voice of the speaker seems to be crying out these requests with no restraint proves that he is completely consumed by this need for the resulting faithfulness that is ensured. The words of the poem are harsh and severe. Their hard sound allows the reader to truly understand how weak and wounded the speaker feels. An imagery that touches the reader’s sense of feeling, both physically and emotionally, is illustrated predominantly throughout the verse. The words paint perfectly the horrible images of being imprisoned, broken, or ravished. The reader feels the pain that would be brought if these things actually occurred. At the same time the harsh words and images cause the reader to also identify with the emotional state the speaker has to be in to make such requests. Donne also uses other poetic devices that cause the reader to feel the words instead of simply reading them. For example, the alliteration in line four (break, blow, burn) brings with it the feeling of being knocked down or overthrown simply by its beating rhythm. The structure of the poem’s sentences also seems to stress the speaker’s current state more than the help that would be brought by his God intervening. Donne does this by placing these improved results in the middle of the sentences as subordinate clauses, causing the reader to give less emphasis to the possibilities for healing and focus more on the speaker’s current state of hopelessness. Donne’s poem is overall captivating, real, and moving. It stirs emotion inside of the readers and holds their attention with the harsh reality that this poem is the description of nearly all people who have faith. Though the phrase â€Å"three-personed God† is an allusion to the Christian triumvirate, anyone who is deep-rooted in their religion can relate to this desperate longing to be faithful to their God in a real and passionate way. Though hard to believe, most of those people probably feel that this poem was based on a passionate prayer from their very own heart.

A comparison of Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’ and ‘OF Mice and Men’ by John Steinbeck Essay

I will be comparing the novels ‘Frankenstein’ by Mary Shelley and ‘Of Mice and Men’ by John Steinbeck. I will focus on how the main outcasts in each book feel and how their emotions are presented and what effects this has on the reader. The novel Frankenstein is about a man Victor Frankenstein, who grew up in Geneva, Switzerland as an eldest son of a quite wealthy and happy family. His parents adopted an orphan Elizabeth, who later becomes his wife. Frankenstein wasn’t very popular although he had a good friend called Henry Cleval. At a young age he found the need to learn and at 19 he went to a University in Ingolstadt, Germany. Here he found his need to learn even greater and his interests soon became an obsession. After four years of intensive studying he took his work further and created life from different parts of the human body taken graveyards, slaughterhouses and dissecting rooms. When the creature awoke he realised that he had created a monster, but what Victor hadn’t realised was that it had feelings like any other human being. Out of his nervousness when the monster disappeared, he caught a fever which his good friend Henry Cleval nursed him back to health. As he went home he was informed of his brother’s death, and when he saw the creature again he knew it was the monster. Scared of what his family might think he decided not to tell them but he let his knowledge of the real killer mentally torture him, especially when Justine a good friend of the family was accused and hanged for murder. He left the house and went wandering in the valleys, there Frankenstein’s creation meets him and tells him his life story. After leaving Frankenstein’s laboratory, the monster went and found himself in a village where he was by attacked villagers because of his appearance. He then found refuge in the country side and stayed in a small hovel next to a house occupied by a blind man and his two children. Here he learnt to speak and read by reading the family’s books. Then longing for some companions he speaks to the blind man which he knows won’t judge him on appearance. He gets in a friendly conversation but then the man’s children come back and it all goes wrong. The monster filled with anger and rage then runs of into the forest Here he meets Frankenstein’s younger brother who he strangles, knowing that it will hurt Frankenstein. The monster has only has request from Frankenstein, that he makes him a wife so he won’t be lonely all his life. Frankenstein is moved by this and agrees, knowing that the monster will carry on killing if he doesn’t. Victor leaves for England with Henry Cleval to finish off his work, promising to Elizabeth that he will marry her on his return. Victor started to work on his second creation when he starts to get doubts and destroys his work while the monster is secretly watching. The monster then swears revenge and tells Victor that he will be with him on his wedding night. The next day the body of Henry Cleval is found and Victor is accused of murder. He sees the body and eventually gets cleared of the charge and he heads back to Geneva very unwell, knowing that the monster has claimed another victim. He then gets married to Elizabeth promising to tell her the secret after there wedding night, but she gets killed by the monster. After another member of his family is lost he tracks the monster which eventually leads him to the artic, where he gets taken aboard Walton’s ship. Exhausted he tells Walton his story and asks him to kill the monster if he dies. The ship gets free of the ice where the crew decide to go home, Victors health decreases until he eventually dies and the monster visits his dead corpse. He then talks about his suffering and how he hates himself because of all the people he has killed. Finally with no meaning to life left he talks about building his funeral pile and leaves the ship. The book ‘Of Mice and Men’ has two main characters, George Milton and Lennie Small. George and Lennie work together going from ranch to ranch as labourers. Lennie is a huge man, gigantic in size but has a brain of a child whereas George is a small man but is highly intelligent; they hang round and work together using Lennie’s strength and George’s brains. They both recently escaped from a farm in Weed where a woman accused Lennie of rape, when he was supposedly only feeling her dress because he likes soft things. Lennie loves George telling him about his dream of having small farm with a vegetable patch and a rabbit hutch. The rabbit hutch is the only part of the plan that Lennie constantly remembers because of his limited memory span. The two head off for a ranch in California, when they are almost the George tells Lennie that if there is any trouble he is to hide in the brush near the river and wait for George to find him. When George and Lennie reach the farm where they will be working, they meet an old man called Candy who shows them their beds and tells them that their boss is angry because they are late. The boss speaks to Lennie but finds it suspicious because George keeps speaking for Lennie. After the boss leaves, his son Curly enters the bunkhouse looking for his wife. Curly has a new wife who everyone knows that she always flirts with other men. Later that evening Curly’s wife comes in and starts flirting, later on curly returns and starts picking on Lennie in an attempt to start a fight because he likes to think he is tougher than everyone else. After the first day at work, all the men return to the bunkhouse where Slim, a kind man gives Lennie a puppy. The other men leave for the Whorehouse and Lennie goes and visits Crooks, a black stable buck. Crooks makes Lennie realize how alone and isolated he would be if George abandoned Lennie. The next morning Lennie is playing with his new puppy when he accidentally kills it, Curly’s wife then enters the barn and lets him feel her soft dress, with his huge size he gets a bit forceful and she begins to scream. Trying not to get into trouble he covers her mouth and accidentally breaks her neck. Lennie runs to hide in the brush where he hopes George will save him. The other men then find her dead body and hunt Lennie down to kill him. George knows where Lennie is and points them in the opposite direction. George steals Carlson’s gun and finds Lennie, he calms him down but then shoots him in the head. The others then find him and George tells them what happened. Both stories end in tragedy, and have as a central figure as an outcast due to a mental or physical defect. In â€Å"Frankenstein† the writer starts of by making Victor seem happy and jolly person to help contrast the change in his mood and his way of thinking later in the book, much like George telling Lennie about the small farm they are going to own. In â€Å"Frankenstein† the Monster had the potential to be good or bad and for the majority of the book he was trying to be good and get some friends â€Å"I, Should first win their favour, and afterwards there love† Due to his defects though, none felt sympathy for him, he was just a ‘monster’ this was what drove him to the killing .He tried making friends with the blind which went very well until his children came back and they say him â€Å"Felix darted forward, and with supernatural force tore me from his father† . He soon began hatred for all man kind, for them being so predigest against h ow he looked. In both stories the writer creates sympathy for the two characters, Frankenstein’s monster is an outcast because of his physical defects and Lennie because of his mental defects. The writer creates sympathy for the monster by giving it hideous looks where even the creator Frankenstein can not bare to look at it â€Å"he was ugly then; but it became a thing such as Dante could not have conceived† The fact that monster had the potential to be good or bad but turns bad because of the way people treat him adds more sympathy. There are loads of other points in the story where sympathy is created for the monster, a main point is when Frankenstein goes back on his word and decides not to make the monster a partner so it will not be lonely. Also the monsters talk with Frankenstein on why he wants another one like himself gets a lot of sympathy from the reader. â€Å"I thought with a sensation of madness on my promise of creating another like him, trembling with passion, torn to pieces the thing on which I engaged. Mary Shelly keeps adding sympathy through the novel as she uses very dramatic and descriptive language to show the monsters agony. Later on in the novel the sympathy soon runs out for the monster as he turns evil and makes his soul purpose of his existence to seek revenge on his creator. Lennie gets sympathy in a whole different way, he is not totally rejected by society like Frankenstein’s monster but still does not fit in like other people due to his mental intellect. Throughout the novel Steinbeck emphasises Lennie’s two main defects, his incredible strength and mental intellect of a child and when put together these can be a very dangerous combination. Steinbeck constantly reminds the reader of Lennie’s child like attitude and his lack of adult awareness e.g. when he kept the dead mouse in his pocket as a pet. The way Steinbeck writes throughout the novel about how Lennie is an incredible worker and can lift twice as much as other men emphases Lennie’s incredible strength. The way Lennie always talks about the rabbit’s gains him a lot of sympathy from the reader as it is the kind of thing a child would talk about. Another time Steinbeck makes the reader feel sorry for Lennie is when he accidentally kills the puppy which he loved dearly, this shows that he does not always follows George’s commands and it can get him into trouble. During the story the writer does not want the reader to hate Lennie even through he commits a serious crime the reader still feels sympathy for him as he acts in the only way that he knows how.

Being a member of the economic development board in the leadership simulation program allowed me to develop and hone my leadership skills. The program was a platform for me to come across the experiences that senior leaders face in their respective disciplines. By assuming a placement position in the economic department, I was exposed to the brunt of real responsibilities. The various skills that the simulation experience honed included better communication ability, making decisions in the spur of the moment as well as putting them to the test of thoughts and brainstorming, solving conflicts that may arise in the course of activities and performing other responsibilities of a board member. Being a simulated board member also opened the opportunity to interact with my peers and to work as a team. I realized the importance of team work and the importance of each and every member in interprofessional teams. This not only helped me to direct the decisions taken towards the optimal performance of the board but also to develop value-generating strategies which served to improve the efficiency of the processes. In the program, I came to identify my leadership style and to create a leadership plan2. The leadership program helped me to make my way through the problem-based scenarios in an organized and structured way. I was given different situations. In one such situation, being a member of the economic development board, I was required to evaluate the feasibility of a funding proposal. A lump sum of $1 million was proposed to be given to an economic development group, over a course of three years. My job was to investigate and decide whether the investment was worth it and if it contributed towards the betterment of the community as a whole. $1 million is a lot of money and in order to make such a decision, I had to evaluate the aims of the econ omic development group in detail. The situation allowed me to further upon my accounting skills and to weigh the profits against the possible losses. Discussing the situation with other board members allowed to me to diversify my communication and negotiation skills and to use the collective opinion in making a decision which is for the greater good of the community. This means that a person who is interested in being a leader may attend training sessions and acquire the required skills to lead others. Leadership Theories There various theories of leadership that are classified into trait, behavioral, participative, and situational. Trait theories argue that leaders are born with characteristics, which include self confidence, dependence, assertion, dominance, and ambitious among others (Tompkins, 2005, p. 98). Leaders also possess skills such as fluent communication, persuasion, and creativity. According to this theory, a person who does not possess these characteristics is not an efficient leader (Sharma, & Grant, 2011, p. 10). Behavioral theories, on the other hand, argue that leaders may acquire desirable leadership skills and traits from the environment. An example of behavioral hypothesis is Theory X, which argues that employ ees are lazy and desire minimum work, and for this reason, a leader should coerce them to perform tasks using available techniques such as punishments (Arnold, 2012, p. 69). Participative leadership theories argue that leaders should be autocratic meaning that they should involve other in making decisions; while participative hypothesis postulates that directors are effective listeners of feedback and they act in response. The progress of civilization resulted in the generation of more complex nature of waste. The increasing industrialisation and consumerism from the 19th century resulted in pollution of earth by the burgeoning generation of non-biodegradable waste. The increasing population, then increasing demands, then increasing industrialisation is the cycle which is continuously adding to the non-biodegradable waste in the environment. Classification of waste: According to the source of generation, the solid waste can classified as: Household waste or the municipal waste Industrial waste or the hazardous waste Biomedical waste or the infectious waste Municipal waste- The municipal waste includes the household waste, construction debris and waste from the streets. The municipal solid waste generated has grown from 6million tonnes (in 1947) to 48 million tonnes (in 1997)! Shockingly, more than 1/4th of this waste is not collected at all and more than half of the cities in India do not have the adequate capacity to transport it and also many available landfills are not managed well and are also not inclined to safeguard the soil and groundwater from contamination. Around 7 million tonnes of hazardous waste is generated in India mainly in the cities; Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The waste generated by industries is primarily metals, chemicals, paper, pesticides, dyes, etc. Hospital waste- It refers to the waste generated during the diagnosis, treatment of human-beings or animals or that generated during the research activities undertaken in the field. This type of waste can be highly infectious and can result in serious damages to mankind if not managed properly in a scientific manner. Such waste can be soiled waste, anatomical waste, sharps, chemical waste, discarded medicines, etc. The government has enforced Bio-medical Waste (Management and Handling) Rules,1998 for making the medical institutions to handle the waste properly. Regarding the project: Though the educational institutes do not burden the environment with waste as compared to the waste generated by other organisations, still they generate a significant amount of waste which can become difficult to manage without any expertise in the field. In fact, such waste can become even harmful if not handled properly. So, attention needs to be paid towards this and therefore we are undertaking this research project to find out the system of managing solid waste in SVC, to find the loopholes, problems or inefficiencies in the processes (if any) and to try to provide remedial solutions to such bottlenecks. One of the main idea which seems apparent and emphasises the importance of this project is that the educational institutes seem to be generating waste primarily which is biodegradable in nature. Biodegradable waste is the waste which is of plant or animal or natural origin and can be broken down into simple compounds by microorganisms. It can be decomposed by the microorganisms ultimately. So it gets back into nature unlike the non-biodegradable waste which stays in the environment for an indefinite period of time (like plastic). Methodology: Data Collection Primary Sources Secondary Sources Student interviews Personal observations Campus administrators interview We will be relying primarily on secondary source of data for this project since this source is likely to provide us a very precise and accurate information saving our time and cost of collecting primary first-hand information. We will also be observing the practices in the campus for some first-hand information and patterns on waste generation and we will also interview a sample of students from the campus to gather primary data. Our source of secondary information is Mr. AT Sutar, Campus Administrator of SVC. So we will collect information from Mr. AT Sutar through a personal interview and then collect data and analyse it to reach a specific conclusion about the state of waste management in the campus. Some of the questions posed to Mr. AT Sutar in the interview were: Q- What is the area of land occupied by the campus? Q- What kind of waste is generated in the campus? Q- How does the waste generated from different colleges differ in composition and volume? Q- What is the procedure of collection of waste? Q- How is the waste stored before it goes for its final treatment? Q- How is the waste disposed off ultimately? Q- Is there any waste which you think can be controlled? Q- Is there any problem presently being faced in waste management? Some important questions that we asked to the students were: Q- What is the waste that you throw in the college dustbins? Q- Is the waste generated by you constant or varies over time periods? Q- Are there any specific factors which you think results in unnecessary increase in waste generation in SVC? Q- What would be your views if the colleges take a decision to ban or restrict the use of non-biodegradable substances like polybags and thermocol in the campus (SVC)? Findings: By the interview with Mr. AT Sutar the students and our observation, we found the following information about the waste generated and its management procedure in SVC: Type of waste generated: Being an educational institute, the main type of waste generated is stationery which includes papers, pens, pencils etc. The quantity of such waste is the highest from Symbiosis Institute of Design (which is around 7-10 times the waste generated by any other institute) due to the nature of the subjects taught. Food waste is also generated in a significant quantity from the campus cafeteria, juice centre and mess. Further, the campus medical centre generates bio-medical waste which requires special treatment due to its harmful nature. Since the advanced medical treatments are not performed here, the bio-medical wastes composition is limited to sharps, bandages etc. which is relatively east to handle vis-Ã  -vis the waste of other medical institutions like hospitals. But the amount of sharps and related waste also increases tremendously during the health check-up of the students at the campus which requires attention. Other waste includes plastic, thermocole, glass, tin and also the decoration material and allied waste which is observed during the institutions fests and extra-curricular activities and competitions. Our interviews with the students revealed the following additional information: While eating in the mess, students initially take a good amount of food in their plates and sometimes a lot of this goes waste when they do not like its taste or when they become full. This results in food wastage. Students also said the reason for increase in non-biodegradable waste in campus during college fests can be due to the use of decoration materials like thermacole and upon questioning whether they would be able to substitute them with the biodegradable substances, their reply was in positive which implies that there was non-awareness among them about the issue and they can be able to reduce non-biodegradable during fests if motivated to do so. The cleaning staff has the responsibility of segregating the waste after it is collected in the dustbins. Then this waste is accumulated in the basement after segregation for sending it to its place of disposal or treatment. Waste Treatment: The biodegradable waste like food waste is sent to the biogas plant and the other waste which cannot be treated by the campus is sent with the PMC waste disposal truck which takes a round in Viman Nagar daily. The biogas plant was established in the campus in 2005 with a cost of around 10 lakhs and is currently being operated by 3 specialist employees. The capacity of the biogas plant is much more than is being utilised and the energy generated by the plant is being utilised for boiling the water which in turn is used for cleaning the utensils of the colleges mess and cafeteria. The pressure generated of the biogas is very less which further creates less power/electricity. This implies that the biogas plant in the campus is being underutilised. Problems identified: The problems identified by us are: Excessive wastage of food by the students. Significant increase in the generation of non-biodegradable waste during college fests extra-curricular activities. Underutilisation of biogas plants capacity. We also didnt recognize any recycling activity in the campus. Recommendations: The wastage of food by the students can be reduced by inducing them to take food in little amounts and to take it again if they want rather than putting it altogether in one go in their plates. Posters can also be put up regarding this in the colleges mess so that the students are reminded of it every time they are putting food in their plates. During the college fests, students can be encouraged to reduce the use of non-biodegradable substances as far as possible. Other substances like polybags and thermacole can be banned in the campus and fines can be imposed on any student found using them to strictly discourage their use. Also, the biogas plant in the campus is being underutilised to a great extent. The plant gets input (biodegradable waste) to its full capacity occasionally during the college fests when the amount of waste generated is 3-4 times the waste generated during the normal college days. So the plant has an idle capacity of about half its full capacity during the maximum period of the year. Further, we feel that the investment made in the plant is not yielding sufficient returns as the amount of power being generated is very less apparently due to the low capacity utilisation of the plant. So, for tackling this issue, it is required that the plant is made to operate on its full capacity. Now this cannot be done by asking students to unnecessarily generate more waste within the campus but it can be solved by tying up with PMC and getting the required biodegradable waste from the PMC garbage truck which further reduces PMCs waste processing load too. Once the biogas plant starts operating on its full capacity, it will result in the generation of more power which can further be used in the college and save funds on electricity bills. Further, to encourage recycling in the campus, students can be induced to form up clubs for the purpose of taking up the recycling activity (even if its on a small scale) and stimulating their creativity to generate the best creations out of the waste. My Journey to be a Teacher Starting the first year of college I was your average frightened teenager; however, unlike most I knew what I wanted to be: a teacher. Then something amazing happened, I was asked why I wanted to teach. I didn’t know what to say, so. I looked back at my life. I tried to find when I made the decision to be a teacher and what my reasoning was. I found the obvious reasons: I love children, I want to help, and I love learning; but I had to ask myself if these things enough to make me the kind of teacher that changes lives. I didn’t know. I decided to become a teacher in the third grade. Mrs. Sager, my third grade teacher, had a zest for life and made learning an adventure. I wanted and still want to be like her, but was a mentor from when you were eight a good reason to be a teacher? As any child knows when you’re having trouble, call mom! I called my mom and ask her, if I weren’t your child, would you want me to teach your child? As always mom surprised me. She reminded me of little things I done when I was young, and then told me that I was her child, but I have also been her teacher. With mom’s confidence I felt a little better, but had still not figured out for myself if I had what it took to be a teacher or if I even wanted to be one anymore. The fear that I might be following an eight year olds dream crept into my heart as I hung up the phone. Did I want to teach? Then, I was talked into taking a three-week course that changed my view of teaching. I owe my councilor my sanity. In EDF 200, I started the path to finding my answer. I leaned that I hadn’t loved Mrs. Sager for her great lecture notes; I loved her because she loved me first. In class Professor Beaman said that there would be a point when we would be walking down the hall and Johnny would pick up a worm and ask us to tell him about it, and it would hit us that that is why we teach. Well, there wasn’t a worm, but I now know what she meant. While helping a friend with homework in math class, I found my reason.

Was Hamlet mad, or was it one big act in order to give reason for his irrational actions and to keep his vengeful motives confidential?      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In Shakespeare's tragedy, Hamlet, these questions are continually asked and some are answered.   Hamlet, the protagonist, has lost his father by murder, and is urged to seek vengeance by his father who appears to him as a ghost. Though towards the end of the play in Act III, Gertrude calls her son to her chambers to discuss the reasoning of his putting on a play so closely related to the death of his father.   She tells him how upset Claudius is and is weary of Hamlet's recent actions.   At this Hamlet explodes on his mother and threatens to kill her.   Gertrude cries for help, and Pilonius answers this cry. A Torrential Downpour in the South Essay -- Descriptive Essay, Descript

What causes fascination? Perhaps it is our inherent curiosity of the unknown. Why then, do we often marvel at the most mundane of phenomena? Wherein lies the secret to this sensation of phenomenal wonder - the ability to perceive the ordinary with a unique sensual acuity? I cannot claim to have this aforementioned acuity, but I have endeavored on many occasions to hunt for the intriguing in what is plain - to experience ‘phenomenal wonder’. There are experiences which do not require acuity to fascinate us - the mystical. I have encountered much that is mystical, but the torrential downpoor will forever amaze me. I pity those who have not bathed in the torrential downpoors of the southern states, for such a shower cannot be found in the most elaborate of spas. Many northern states are deprived of the torrential downpoor, and for me to explain its splendor, I must first describe the atmosphere prior to it. During the summer, the south is like a clay pot in an oven. The land is dry, hot, and dusty. The heat convinces you that the mouth of hell is opening, with flames licking your feat as you walk. Entire communities pray for a miracle hailstorm to extinguish this incredible heat. It is apparent that no amount of praying will result in a hailstorm in the middle of July; rain, on the other hand, is quite possible. Meteorologists argue it is the natural order of things; poets and romanticists claim it is the will of thirsty land that prompts the sudden showers of the downpoors. I am not concerned with the cause of this heavenly precipitation, only interested in its result. The first torrential downpoor is like tasting a sip of water after days in the desert. The mouth of hell is closed and the flames smothered. You can smell ... ... looked innocent and tranquil. As the ferocity of the downpour would end, we would begin to open the windows. Chilly breezes would sweep magnificently through our house, almost as if the wind had a mind of its own. I swear that I have, on more than one occasion, touched the wind. Physicists may label my claim as impossible; others envy me. The wind is a spirit; it is like a hand that strokes the earth to soothe it; and if you were to use an innate acuity (which we all possess) the spirit in the wind will surely touch you. For me, the torrential southern downpoors have never lasted long enough. The cold dry winter would always come too early, and the downpoors begin too late. Perhaps that is why I savor every rain drop. I have tried to search for such ‘phenomenal wonder’, but I have yet to succeed in finding an experience more astounding than that of rain.

Explore Shakespeare’s dramatic presentation of Macbeth in Act 1 discussing how audiences have responded then and now Macbeth, written by William Shakespeare between 1603 and 1606, features a Scottish warrior called Macbeth, whose life is totally changed by the prophecies of three witches. It shows how a hardened warrior such as Macbeth, who can nearly win battles on his own, can be mentally destroyed by a series of events which happen over a few days. The play starts gloomily and with a sinister feeling about it; there is thunder and lightning which in Shakespeare’s play mean there is going to be trouble ahead, and things will not be as they seem to be, giving and immediate warning to the audience, while the three witches begin to cast their spells. Shakespeare opens with the witches to show their domination over the events which are forthcoming to the play. In everything that the witches say, they deliberately confuse and talk in riddles: ‘When the battle is lost and won’ and ‘Fair is foul’ and ‘Foul is fair’ which sets the scene for what happens later in the play. The language creates a cloud over events, leaving the audience confused and puzzled over what is to happen to Macbeth and the other characters in the rest of the play. It leaves a dilemma in the audience mind as they make up their own minds on Macbeth’s character as he is linked with their evil since they intend to meet him. Shakespeare fixes the historical setting in scene 2, which is set in camp near the battlefield; it reveals that there was unrest in Scotland at that time, as the Kings army are fighting a group of rebels led by the then Thane of Cawdor. This scene again gives information about Macbeth, but this time it tells the audience that Macbeth is a hardened warrior who will kill for the honour of his King and country. The captain describes how both Macbeth and Banquo fought on regardlessly even though tired, against the villainous low life rebels, giving the historical context. The captain describes how they destroyed and slaughtered the enemy and how they should have been killed because they were so outnumbered, which leads Duncan to praise the two warriors, practically calling them Supermen: ‘noble’ and ‘valiant’. The audience has now seen the two sides of Macbeth: good and bad, it is up to them to decide whether or not he is good, valiant and honourable, or evil, murderous and possessed. It is only Scene 3 when the audience finally sees Macbeth, speaking to the witches, when they start to make prophecies about Macbeth, initially calling him: ‘Thane of Glamis’ which he inherited from his father. Next they say: ‘All hail Macbeth, hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor’ and then: ‘All hail Macbeth, that shalt be King hereafter’. This describes the past: Thane of Glamis, which he already is; the present: Thane of Cawdor, because he becomes it later in this scene; and the future with the prophecy of him becoming King. Macbeth is obviously extremely interested, but Banquo is more hesitant. He sees these words as just things they say to build up Macbeth’s confidence and are not the truth. ‘Instruments of Darkness’. Scene 4 begins with Macbeth saying ‘The service and loyalty I owe,’ which makes him seem honourable, he then goes on to flatter Duncan by saying. In doing it pays itself. Your Highness’ part is to receive our duties, and our duties are to your throne and state, children and servants, which do but what they should be doing everything safe toward your love and honour.’ All this is an attempt to win over Duncan, as he has already won a battle for him and flattery he hopes the prophecy of his becoming King will become a truth. Duncan is clearly flattered and replies ‘I have begun to plant thee and will labour to make thee full of growing.’ Since Duncan wants to give him more rewards, this will definitely raise the hope of Macbeth that he will become heir to the throne. However, Macbeth’s dreams are shattered by what Duncan is to say next: ‘Our eldest, Malcolm, whom we name hereafter The Prince of Cumberland’, meaning that Malcolm, not Macbeth, is to be the next King. The audience is as shocked by Macbeth at this sudden event after the earlier build up and would sympathise with Macbeth whose balloon has been popped and is crashing to the ground. He is extremely angry and distraught at Duncan as after everything he has done for him. It was his greatest desire to become King of Scotland, a dream shattered by Duncan, who surely must pay for what he has done- or will Macbeth carry on being loyal to his King in hope of future rewards? Will the wait for the third prophecy come true? This is a difficult decision for the audience to make as Macbeth has been associated with evil earlier in the act, but also has, done good deeds for his King. The audience ponders on which way he will turn-towards good, or evil-and will anyone influence his decision? In the next scene Shakespeare begins to answer the audiences questions as scene 5 is set in Macbeth’s castle, where Lady Macbeth is reading a letter from Macbeth describing the events. Macbeth describes his success saying that he knows more than ‘mortal knowledge’, adding that witches predicted he will be King, but does not tell her that he was not made Prince of Cumberland. He says that she must think about the news because he knows she is greedy and he is tempting her by telling her what happened. The audience will see that the only reason Macbeth wrote it was because he was angry and distraught. Lady Macbeth is definitely tempted by this, determined that Macbeth will be King and she will be Queen. Yet she recognises that Macbeth is too ‘nice’ to go about it the quickest way and that he will want to do it the ‘right’ way. When it comes to conducting myself as an ethical and responsible student, based on my experiences, my self-knowledge and my readings for this class, I will study the positives of different ethical lenses, I will find balance in when to look at a group of people as a whole or individually, and I will ensure that I hold myself accountable for those depending on me. I will study the positives of different ethical lenses so that I can be the best that I can be. Different situations call for different ethical views. If I can expand my knowledge of dissimilar ethical lenses then I will be better equipped to handle a wider variety of situations. I have more of a value on sensibility, when there are times when thinking rationally is for the best. When I am able to find the balance between when to view a situation as a whole or by the individual, I will increase my effectiveness in dealing with a larger number of people. I tend to focus on the individual instead of the group. I have to start taking a step back at looking at the bigger picture when necessary. When focusing solely on each person alone I very easily can lose sight of the bigger picture. Sometimes to reach a goal everyone has to be held to the same level of responsibility instead of different goals for each singular person. When I am able to exercise my free will I lean towards walking away when my needs are met. I have to hold myself responsible for making sure all requirements are achieved. I cannot leave my associates or fellow students to struggle to have everything completed. I am not only responsible for my part, but also helping everyone else to complete their share of the work. Article Analysis Paper The authors Kauppi Anne, Tuji Vanamo, Kari Karkola, Juhani Merikanto that wrote â€Å"Fatal child abuse: a study of 13 cases of continuous abuse† was published on 5 January 2012. The main point that this author is trying to convey is how child abuse is active all around the world. Even though some are fatal which is rare it is still on the rise to this day. Many of the children living in those conditions could have been prevented from someone reporting the abuse but failed to do so.Many of the parents in the study knew about the battering, but because the violence of the family members hindered the other parent to put an end to the abuse. The injuries in the children were also seen in daycare or by other authorities but failed to act in time. The signs of battering was a change in the child’s behavior such as depression, withdrawal, anxiety or being absent from school or daycare. The most common injuries in abuse is skin and soft tissue.In the fat al abuses, it was most always head trauma. After fatal battering most parents do not want to take the unconscious child to the emergency room because they did not intentionally mean to kill or seriously hurt the child. In the beginning of the paper, it tells some background on the injured patients and then the results on what happened to the children and parents. Also, there is a chart that lists the age, patient, and short descriptions containing the abuse done to them.The end of the paper has a discussion about how child abuse is under reported or not looked into enough. Meanwhile, tells how important reporting it could be or how it could save an innocent child’s life. The evidence that the author has is statistics and a chart of how many children are being effected by child abuse. Also, percentages of how many children had soft tissue injuries or head trauma which is fatal. The author is trying to address this to everyone.This needs to be addressed because people often see that a child is getting abused but does not want to get involved so they do not report it. Millions of children are abused each day and no one does anything about it. Seeing that this article was only written a year ago shows everyone it is still going on today and we have not found a solution but needs to be addressed to prevent abuse as much as possible. People have been trying to prevent this for years and now child services are cracking down on these cases more often.I like this article a lot and agree with it one hundred percent. Its strength is it talks about things that are happening every day that needs to be prevented and taken care of. It also shows the risks, signs, and symptoms that happen to innocent children. I would recommend this article to someone else because this could be helpful for anyone to know the signs of child abuse or the things that could happen if it was not reported. I think this article could be useful for my research because it has a lot of statistic s I could use.

Unmarked vans drive up and down the streets of Britain seeking to detect unlicensed televisions (TV Vans). To American eyes, this is something out of North Korea. To Britons, it is part of the history of the BBC. For many years, commercial television was seen as an unalloyed bad. When new channels were being auctioned off, they were given to the BBC, because â€Å"[i]n short, commercial television was regarded as failing to live up to its responsibilities as a public service.
